We just got home from an amazing trip to visit family for Christmas, meanwhile we made a quick 2 night stop in Zermatt, Switzerland. We, of course, know the beauty of Italy through all of our travels and whether its hot or cold it never ceases to amaze me. Since we stay up in Northern Italy we are greeted with beautiful views of the Alps daily! We decided since it was winter and cold why not go all in and plan a winter escape? We took our rental car and made the 3 hour drive to Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt is only accessible by train- so when we reached Täsch we parked our car and took the 15 minute train ride to town. We stayed at the most gorgeous, quaint hotel called Romantica, which was picturesque with snow covered walkways and Christmas lights everywhere! Since we were only staying for 2 nights we decided to make the most of it and sight see right away. The town was decorated beautifully for Christmas and getting around was easy since almost everyone could speak Italian or English but the predominant language in this ski town is Swiss German. After watching everyone from kids to adults ice skating on the natural ice skating rink in town and shopping along the many local shops we got hungry. Our first night we ate like locals and tried out fondue, then hit up the town to see if anything exciting was happening. The local Ice Hockey team was playing in the outdoor rink and everyone gathered around and cheered for the Zermatt Matterhorns while staying warm drinking gluhwein. The next day we woke up and decided to try something fun! Since we are not skiers or snowboarders but still wanted in on snow fun, we decided to go tobogganing. We took the train up to Gornergrat and checked out the shops and cafe and then headed down to Rottenboden where we rented a toboggan for 8 swiss franks for the day. We had a blast on the 10 minute slopes when you then picked up the next train and went up only to sled your way back down again! After hours of laughing, crashing and being frozen we headed back to hotel to shower, rest and get ready for our last night in Zermatt. We decided on a burger joint for dinner and weren't disappointed. Overall, Zermatt is a friendly, beautiful town- but get your wallets ready as the restaurants are quite expensive! If you are looking for a snow covered paradise, then Zermatt is it!
